Ep. #44 Neuromodulation, Neuroplasticity, & Peak Performance Training w/ Toby Pasman

Toby Pasman is the founder of Roscoe’s Wetsuit Neuro and host of the Roscoe’s Wetsuit Neuro Podcast. He is a neurophysiology researcher with a Master’s of Psychology from Lynn University and is board-certified in QEEG Brain Mapping and EEG Neurofeedback. Toby enjoys paddle boarding along the intercoastal, biking through the surrounding islands of Miami, and engaging in deep, intellectual conversations.

In this episode, Toby and I discuss some of the latest neuromodulation technologies and how they can be used for healing and for cognitive optimization – training to reach peak cognitive performance. The field of neuroscience is an amazing blossoming field of study, and out of it have come various technologies, techniques, and strategies that people can use to understand their neurophysiology (and how it affects and interacts with the rest of their physiology) and utilize these technologies to treat disorders and optimize performance. Some of the neuromodulation technologies include QEEG Brain Mapping, EEG Neurofeedback, Transcranial Stimulation, Audio-Visual Entrainment, and Brain Photobiomodulation.

“The discovery of neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to rewire itself throughout our entire lifetime, and recent breakthroughs in neurotechnology have enabled us to now measure and modulate the electrical and chemical activity of neurons (brain cells) to improve focus, sharpen attention, improve mood, deepen sleep, and decrease neural inflammation.”  – Toby Pasman

Toby’s company, Roscoe’s Wetsuit Neuro, is an applied neuroscience company bringing premium brain health coaching and targeted neuromodulation individualized to each client’s unique neurophysiology. You regularly workout your body at the gym to maintain optimal health, why not start taking your brain to the gym as well? Toby Pasman

Toby Pasman is a neurophysiology researcher who graduated from the University of Oregon in 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and completed his Master’s of Psychology through Lynn University in 2021. He worked on the Emotions and Neuroplasticity Project at the Brain Development Lab at his university, learning how emotions relate to changes in key brain networks.

Toby got curious about whether he could hack his own brain and began experimenting with neurotechnology including neurofeedback and neurostimulation to work on his own social anxiety. He noticed great improvements in his verbal fluency and ability to stay relaxed in social situations.

Toby began working at a peak performance facility outside of Seattle, Washington, training high profile CEOs, professional athletes, and Hollywood actors, who were looking to maximize their brain performance, recording QEEG brain maps and utilizing neurofeedback and neurostimulation technology.

Toby has since worked in the substance abuse and mental health fields, utilizing QEEG brain mapping, neurofeedback, neurostimulation, and PEMF therapy to treat patients clinically. He trained under Dr. Nicholas Dogris, CEO of Neurofield Neurotherapy, learning extensively about applying various forms of neurostimulation to enhance brain performance.

Toby is currently training to become an accredited human potential coach through the Human Potential Institute.

Ep. #18 The Neuroscience of Meditation and Cannabis w/ Dr Hilary Marusak

Dr. Hilary Marusak is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, Wayne State University School of Medicine and directs the THINK lab (www.wsuthinklab.com) . She is also an Adjunct Assistant. In this episode, Dr. Hilary Marusak and I discuss some of the latest neuroscientific research on how meditation affects various brain systems. Meditation has been used by humans for thousands of years as a tool for self-regulation, healing, strengthening, and resilience development. And recently, the modern scientific community has begun to investigate how meditation works, which brain systems are involved, and how it can be used therapeutically. The practice of meditation comes in many different forms, and can be applied to many different areas of a person’s life. Hilary’s research focuses primarily on how meditation affects kids, and how it can be used as a therapeutic tool for kids who are dealing with pain, illness, and emotional dysregulation.

We also discuss some of the latest science of cannabis and how the scientific community are working towards gaining a better understanding of the relationship and interaction between cannabis and the endocannabinoid system. Just as meditation has been used by humans for thousands of years, so too has cannabis played a role in many healing traditions in human history. The exact nature of how cannabis affects the body and brain is still largely unstudied and is an exciting field of research. While using cannabis for medicinal purposes has started to rise in society (with the recent legalization), there are also some risks. As the body of scientific literature develops over time, our ability to make educated and informed decisions regarding cannabis use will also increase. Hilary and I also explore some of her research into how cannabis affects the developing brain (i.e. in fetuses, children, and teenagers). While these areas of study are still relatively new, it’s an exciting time to be in this field and studying the potential benefits and risks of cannabis.
