Ep. #10: Authenticity in Grey w/ Ross MacPhail

Ross often wonders how he found his life’s passion and work when he was 73. At a time when most people have been retired for years, he was immersing himself in helping others find meaning in their changing and evolving lives.

The journey to this stage of his life is far from traditional. However, his success in life and work has a common theme. Always be authentic and care about the people you work with and the people you serve.

After decades of helping people find meaning in their jobs and life, Ross realized that people were not controlling their own destinies. This is especially true for seniors. Retirement becomes a journey of existence, not meaning.

With over 15 years of interviewing C-level executives for research firms, he knows how to uncover and compile all the data and key findings in the world of retirement and aging. More importantly, he learned how to take the data and turn it into intelligence that everyone can understand and use.

The 10 plus years Ross spent in the mental trauma field has helped him develop a deeper understanding of how to get people talking about their struggles, fears, and goals.  When people struggle with the impact of trauma, it is easier to be honest and open with a peer. Someone understands their world. Someone who gets them.

When we leave our careers, life should be filled with passion, learning and most importantly being Authentic. To quote Dylan Thomas “Keep the light burning as bright and as long as you can through the passion of being you”.

In this episode, Debbie and I discuss how people need, find, and create meaning in their lives using Viktor Frankl’s logotherapeutic techniques. Through awareness/mindfulness, we can use our innate freedom to will – our ability to find meaning in any situation in life – to create a meaningful and purposeful existence for ourselves. We do not have to remain at the mercy of our surroundings, other people, or our own pain – we can transcend all blockages and limitations to find meaning and, as a consequence, find happiness and fulfillment.

“In this New York Times bestseller, internationally renowned Japanese scientist Masaru Emoto shows how the influence of our thoughts, words and feelings on molecules of water can positively impact the earth and our personal health.” Simon & Schuster

“This book has the potential to profoundly transform your world view. Using high-speed photography, Dr. Masaru Emoto discovered that crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed toward them. He found that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex, and colorful snowflake patterns. In contrast, polluted water, or water exposed to negative thoughts, forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors. The implications of this research create a new awareness of how we can positively impact the earth and our personal health.” Simon & Schuster
